Welcome, at SP2 Life we believe in the importance of sharing recent research regarding the health benefits of Spirulina. The article we will be covering today is A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of spirulina supplementation on indices of mental and physical fatigue in men, which was published in 2016.

OVERVIEW

The study concluded that not only does Spirulina implementation increase people's ability to resist mental fatigue, but it also may help with physical fatigue. A key element to this study is that it was done with men with no preexisting health conditions. Usually, studies are done under extreme stressors or with subjects with preexisting health conditions.

THE STUDY

This study was conducted by Ohio State University. The university researchers tested the hypothesis that Spirulina implementation may increase people's ability to resist mental and physical fatigue. Their study was conducted in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study in men. The researchers used aerobic exercises, mathematical tests, and they were asked to record their own daily fatigue. After one week, a 3 g/day dose of spirulina produced a small, but a statistically significant increase in exercise output (Kcals consumed in 30 min exercise on a cross trainer machine).

CONCLUSION

A mathematical based mental fatigue test showed improved performance 4 hours after the first time of supplementation as well as eight weeks later. Similarly, a subjective survey for a sense of physical and mental fatigue showed improvement within four hours of the first supplementation as well as eight weeks later. Self-reported physical and mental fatigue was also improved hours after Spirulina implementation and was still visible after eight weeks. These results show that spirulina intake can affect fatigue in men.
